Opportunities to think about the Future – Career Education “Mirai School”

At Sumitomo Corporation, we visit high schools to offer an opportunity for students to think about their future career through lectures and dialogues.

What is “Mirai School”

This activity is aimed at developing the next generation of human resources who will drive the future. In this era of drastic change, we expect young people to take on challenges without narrowing their potential, and to develop their abilities to think independently and build a future society, rather than following the past. Mirai School is a career education activity in which Sumitomo Corporation Group employees have dialogues with high school students in various regions with such thoughts in mind. Starting with Tokyo Metropolitan Nishi High School in September 2020, 305 employees have conducted classes at 103 schools and about 17,400 students by the end of FY2023.

A serious match with students who will drive the future

“Sogo-Shosha” quiz as an icebreaker

In the first period of the workshop, the lecturers introduced themselves and gave a quiz as an icebreaker, and then shared their views on work and how students’ experiences were relevant to their jobs with the students, talking about their past careers. In the second period, the lecturers described points regarding career design that they thought were important for survival in this dramatically changing age. Students gave feedback such as “The workshop made me feel like devoting myself to what I can do now for the future,” “It was interesting to listen to real stories told by working adults,” and “I want to discuss the future more.”

We also learn from the students

The students take seriously the experiences of working people of the ages that they do not usually come into contact with, and give feedback on various things that they feel. Inspired by their thoughts on the future, we were also given the opportunity to rethink "what we should do in the future."
In 2024, we plan to deliver classes at 50 schools nationwide that consider the future together.
